Saint Gilbert School

Saint Gilbert Catholic School, also known as Saint Gilbert School and commonly abbreviated as SGS, is a co-educational, Catholic Elementary and Junior High School located in Grayslake, serving Lake County, Illinois and surrounding counties including communities in southern Wisconsin. Saint Gilbert Catholic School is an institution of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago.
==History==
Continuing the tradition of the parish patron saint, Gilbert of Sempringham, Saint Gilbert Parish established and broke ground in August, 1944, to open a school.〔 Sands (1913). “St. Gilbert of Sempringham: 1089-1189”()〕 〔 "Medieval English order enjoys revival in Brazil" () 〕 The Catholic New World newspaper reported that "''after working a full day in factories, on farms and in offices, men and women from St. Gilbert Parish, in Grayslake, spend three hours every night constructing a school and convent to be ready in September.''" The main school building was remodeled from the original parish church building to accommodate children attending grade school. A smaller building was built to serve as a Kindergarten, complete with child-size furniture, electric trains, dolls, tin soldiers and games. A house nearby the school location was remodeled into a convent to accommodate the teaching staff. By September 15, classes started and the school was staffed by 6 Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary with 120 students enrolled. Cardinal Samuel Stritch dedicated Saint Gilbert Catholic School on November 6, 1949.〔 “Saint Gilbert Parish History"()〕
During the 1960s, Saint Gilbert Catholic School saw growth in a variety of building projects. Specifically, in 1961 the convent building was completed, and in 1965, a combined church-school building effort was initiated. This effort delivered four new classrooms for the start of school in the fall of 1966 and the new church was completed with the first mass celebrated on Christmas Eve.
In August, 1983, after nearly 40 years of service the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary were replaced by the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth and Sister Rose Marie O'Barski became the new principal of the school.
In the Fall of 1991, under Revered Father Robert Beaven's leadership, the parish instituted its "Vision for the Future" a five-year parish development plan. This plan was charged with completing the following:
* Converting the old Parish Hall (formerly the church built in 1932) into a chapel with a small meeting area and kitchen;
* The remodeling of the convent (built in 1961) into classrooms;
* Adding another six classrooms and two meeting rooms to be connected to the old convent;
* A remodeling of the present church
In the fall of 1996, the remodeled convent was completed and designated for use as the Junior High. A connecting wing from this building to the Elementary building was completed in the Fall of 2001.
Saint Gilbert Catholic School currently has 27 classrooms including 3 preschool classrooms, a music room, an art studio, a library, 2 computer labs, a media lab, a full sized gym complete with bleachers and a stage, and 2 multipurpose meeting rooms which are shared with the parish.
